“וְהָלַכְתָּ בִּדְרָכָיו — And you shall walk in His ways.”
— Deuteronomy 28:9
One of the most foundational mitzvot in the entire Torah:
To imitate Hashem’s attributes — kindness, compassion, patience, humility, justice, and peace.
Chazal explain: Just as He is merciful, you be merciful; just as He is gracious, you be gracious.
The Rambam writes that this mitzvah shapes your entire character; the Sefer HaChinuch teaches that this is how we become “a people of Hashem.”
In Vayishlach, this mitzvah is lived through Yaakov — his humility before danger, his gratitude for blessing, and his refusal to abandon what matters.

Vayishlach is one of Torah’s most emotionally complex parshiyot.
Yaakov confronts three battles at once:
Commentaries from Rashi, Ramban, Sforno, Abarbanel, Rav Hirsch, Rav Kook, and Rabbi Sacks converge on a single message:
Identity is forged where struggle meets integrity.

Why does Yaakov cross the river alone at night to retrieve “small vessels”?
Chazal say:
Because the righteous value their possessions — not out of attachment, but out of responsibility.
They see every gift as a trust from Hashem.
This essay explores how the sanctity of small details — objects, habits, commitments — becomes the foundation of spiritual greatness.

Every struggle in Vayishlach — internal or external — becomes a doorway to clarity.
Yaakov emerges limping, changed, but renamed. Yisrael. A person who strives and stays.
Mitzvah 11 calls us to walk in Hashem’s ways; Vayishlach shows us how a human being can rise to that calling — not by being perfect, but by being faithful, honest, and deeply attuned to the sanctity of every moment.
In the choices we make, the small things we protect, and the peace we pursue even when it feels costly — we earn our own name.
